Dear Words, You are the Passion We Write…

… thank you for holding our hand when we were young and too scared to say admit our childhood crushes; for posting our problems in private journals; for partnering with Post-Its; and even for making it possible to fill 25 pages with intelligent vocabulary for unintelligent educators.   You are our gateway to expression, aggression, obsession, impression, and hopefully, our dream profession. Thank you for picking our brains and making sense of our world…we would have never have driven anywhere without you!
Sincerely,
Christie Marie

Color & Light! What's Your Color Palette?

Strip away the fluff, the stuff, and the rough and wild impressions that feed the industries of fashion and art.  The skeleton of many bodies of work is color.  Artists and designers this spring and summer (2011) will be looking to once again bounce ideas from art to fashion that resonate back again.  However, the coming seasons play with color in a new and unexpected way.
To work with color is to understand it.  There is no such thing as color without light, right?
Remember that brilliant artist, Monet?  No two pictures of the same scene were alike. Why? Because the time of the day dictates light! Light dictates what color we see.  Let me explain and explore this creative direction…
-Color is a trick.  Flecks of light change the look from light to dark and from soft to hard.    Intertwined shadows and gradations of color lay calm and peaceful in the mind’s eye.

-Historical objects own colors that are only repeatable with the passing of time.  On imperfect surfaces and aged objects rests tonal variations that link us to past times and cherished memories.
-When two or more colors traditionally aren’t friends these coming seasons, mix them together for an unexpected harmony!
-Monochromatic.  It’s a safe choice or a bold choice.  Neon brights turn the heat up on monochromatic tones.
-Light and water mix beautifully.  Whether light is reflected or absorbed, the shadows on the water and the twinkle on the surface make for mesmerizing colors. Look for deep smooth tones that go with the flow.
-Nature’s colors are real and raw. The look of flora and fauna yield natural and uninhibited color.
-Dirty color!  Imperfections, age, and dirt are in their own right, the world's natural finishes.  See what effect they have on color?
-The ever changing appearance of metallic surfaces are never the same and always strong.  Metallic colors can blend or stand alone, however on textiles they are always alluring.

Juicy Trends in Web Design!

Interested in Web Design?

Inspiration has jumped off the web itself to help make it prettier.  In the article “Fashion Websites: Trends, Showcase, Interviews,” in Smashing Magazine, writer Julia May “spoke with two developers whose websites differed in style and implementation to find out the considerations involved in designing a website for a fashion brand.” Fashion websites are a continued expression of the fashions behind the cover webpages, yes, but also an expression within themselves.  I’ve come to the conclusion that artists build foundations for other artists to build beautiful work.  Opportunity is knocking!

Today, there are many different fashion trends when it comes to designing a website for a brand, or anything of interest, really…

Look for clean and contemporary or bold and bright.  Minimalist is another option that unclutters the image and draws in viewers without distraction. In one example KOKOKAKA cleverly combined HTML format and Flash to bring Burberry online to life.  http://www.kokokaka.com/

The Australian designer Josh Goot cleverly lets visitors to do the work for him.  The interactive site moves with the presence of the curser sliding over the page.  (My personal favorite.) See why? http://www.joshgoot.com/

Simple, yet smart, play with color! Miss Sixty did.

If uncluttered, artistic, and alluring is your goal, take a cue from the Indian designer Allan Solly.  The page jumps from the screen in a 3-D effect.  Hand drawn illustrations mimic real life.  If you are a serious web designer, Smashing Magazine suggests BC Web Wise.  http://bcwebwise.com/

Sneaker Heads, Listen Up! Fashion + French Graffiti Art= Awesome

Flipping through books, magazines, the internet, and just about every other piece of media I can get my hands into is like finding the sweetest piece of candy at the bottom of the candy jar-especially when I find what I’m looking for in these sources.  What am I looking for? Artists, designers, unknown talent (or known talent, just not to me haha), and creative thinkers in the world today.

A while back, I came across the name Fafi-a French artist who excels in creating graffiti-like illustrations of young modern females. Her work is alluring as it shines on products by Colette, Adidas, LeSportSac, Coca-Cola, and even M.A.C cosmetics.  While her designs run on the sides of sneakers and decorate tubes of lipsticks and eye shadow covers, she has set to release her own comic book this year to showcase adorable, alluring, and often provocative work that was born into this world sixteen years ago.  See for yourself...

Adidas Collaborations

I'm sure we'll be seeing much more of her work very soon! Vive la France!
